I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and spent my early childhood in a home that was always filled with music. My father played piano for a living – he was a recording artist and also performed in orchestras on television shows. When he wasn’t working there were always impromptu jam sessions at our house. I was fortunate that my father always encouraged me to study, observe and learn as much as I could about music.
Although I loved the piano I became drawn to drums because of a good friend of my Dad’s who was a drummer – Paulinho.
He was a great musician and, in addition to my father, became one of my early inspirations. He worked with many Brazilian artists and was always on tour. I was around 12 years old at the time and and remember how he used to leave one of his drum sets at our house. I was immediately drawn to them and was always playing them - jamming to the radio or to records in my parents’ collection. This was when I decided that playing drums was what I was going to do.
